I think I will be taking art classes until I finally drop off the face of the earth ... love to learn ... also love to read historical and biographical novels ... and in fact, need to do more of both! There is a wonderful artist, Rebecca Rhodes, and I take online lessons from her. This painting was done following one of her wonderful tutorials. So many hours in this and ... so much was learned. While I've been dabbling with oil paint since .. well, since longer than most of you have been alive, I consider myself a beginner in the use of watercolor paint and her classes help to fill my brain with so many techniques. So, thanks to Rebecca for a wonderful lesson! I spent about a week working on this, starting with and developing the eyes ... because if the eyes went wrong I could toss the worse and start over. Anyway, about a week, 4 to 8 hours each time, so that I could allow the paint to dry naturally instead of hurrying and using a blower!Painter Charliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06537406401936612751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6460365883292286205.post-49199938141092831402018-08-29T09:42:00.003-07:002018-08-29T09:42:35.265-07:00From the time I was a very, very small child, each time I saw peonies, I thought of my "Busia" .. my mothers mother. What a gentle soul she was and how I loved her. Anyway, I had never painted a peony and decided that it was time to paint that bright, pink peony that Busia loved so much. I first painted the peony with the green leaves (and had a dickens of a time getting this one finished!) .. <br />

Wanted to force myself to get over this "thing" I have about those 2 colors! Can't tell you how many individual sunflowers and leaves I painted. Then, I got really possessed and decided to do a painting of a group of sunflowers from a photo taken at a farmers market ... less than half way through, I was ready to put an end to the torture but ... I could hear my father with his admonition! "Charlie, finish what you start!" ... okay, Dad!!! So, while it took me way too long to get this finished, here it is.<br />

This spring, I was lucky enough (again) to be able to take the 4 spring classes with Terry Armstrong. Since the day I first picked up a paint brush I have wanted to paint corn .... realistically .... so when this class was offered this spring I was floating on clouds. Work on the painting was done during the 8 hours in class and then at home, another 8 hours or so went into the painting. Grandpa had a huge corn crib and had milk cows and hogs and sometimes, horses and I can remember climbing up and into that corn crib (no matter how many times I was warned to stay out of it) and I would take the dried corn and twist it off of the cob and put it in my hands to feed the horses ... loving that "soft touch" of their mouth as they lifted the corn out of my hands. Such great memories. Each time I look at this painting, I think of Grandpa!</div>

I am lucky enough to be taking online classes from Rebecca Rhodes. You can find the links to her web site and to her online classes if you look right under my banner here on my blog and click on "Watercolor Artists". In all the years that I've oil painted and in these few years that I've been learning watercolors the only dogs that I have ever painting ended up in the trash. Then, I was lucky enough to stumble onto information regarding this most talented artist .. and, her online classes. The little dog posted here ... "The Little Mongrel" was done under her wonderful online guidance. Being an animal lover, with a house full of "rescued" kids .. this little dog so appealed to me and tugged at the strings of my heart! I thank Rebecca for such a wonderful learning adventure!!!</div>

No matter the excuse, the reason for the work not being completed I decided to just sit my critical self down and finish them .... no matter how unhappy I was with the work or no matter the reason that I never finished it! So, here are the results of my Finished ... unfinished paintings! 😊<br />
<br />
The nuthatch was started in class this past fall .. the classes I take from Terry Armstrong (you can find the link to his site above, in Watercolor Artists). The work wasn't finished in class and after I brought it home I just set it aside to "think about it" .. and this is my finished work.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFsGqqp0c4MOr3xbpY7hxqn8GFFdt3uBInfwJbBGoXg897zlTypSsId1b1Qr9TzbczrmTnPYDL-BqkwkepwwxwwAobggm7KTgWYXf4QZqA57IBcCxn6MB7ziVlkwuC1_j_mg-4McFj-KM/s1600/Guess-Its-That-Time-Of-Year.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFsGqqp0c4MOr3xbpY7hxqn8GFFdt3uBInfwJbBGoXg897zlTypSsId1b1Qr9TzbczrmTnPYDL-BqkwkepwwxwwAobggm7KTgWYXf4QZqA57IBcCxn6MB7ziVlkwuC1_j_mg-4McFj-KM/s320/Guess-Its-That-Time-Of-Year.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">GUESS IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The painting below, titled "Rusting Away" was also started in class with Terry. Everything had been completed except for the "leaves" in the bucket and on the shelf ... and for the past 2 years, I've look at it, thought about it .. and then would just not do it! The idea of painting those leaves in an "impressionistic style" was just beyond this artist with her detail oriented, 2 haired brush. Everyone, all my life has teased me about painting with a 2 haired .. and sometimes, a 3 haired brush because of my love of detail. So, this painting (while the wood and cans were "detailed") just had to sit until I could wrap my mind around not painting every single leaf and every single little vein in the leaves! And .. I did finish it before 2016 has flown out the door!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This next painting was started in Terry's class about a year ago. This was another that I just had such a difficult time with because of my overwhelming need to rip out that 2 haired brush and paint every single little leaf!!! It's another that I stewed over, studied .. probably tossed some 4 letter words at and kept putting aside. I FINISHED IT!!! and I've called it "The Volunteers". Whenever something grew in the yard .. that hadn't been planted, my grandmother used to call them volunteers .. and I thought of her when I was painting this.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There was one more painting that was "bothering" me, and it's the one below. It was a painting that I started a couple of years ago .. maybe a year and a half ago .. and it just gave me fits. Haven't a clue what the problem was, but was really one of those paintings that I was either going to cut up or throw away. So, before this year ended, I made up my mind that I was going to sit down and work out the problems that I was having with it .. or, at least attempt to work them out. I love chickadees but this little guy was like the rabbit that I painted ... while I love rabbits, I absolutely, totally and completely hated THAT rabbit! BUT ... with my promise to myself to FINISH my UNfinished work??? ... I forged ahead and did finish it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, there you have it ... the 4 paintings that I have had set aside for 2 months to 2 years ... the little devils of 2016!</div>

I've had this photo for a while and knew that I wanted to do something with it so about a week and a half ago I sketched it out and did the first light wash. During this past week and a half I've fooled around, dinkled with it and tonight, decided that it was time to sit down and finish it. Ninety five percent of the painting was done using 2 colors .. and a third color was added in a very very few places. I had a lot of fun doing this one .. learned more about watercolor .. and it's help me get through this nerve wrecking evening .. as I listen to the Cubs play the Indians. Of course, I'm hoping that "our Cubbies" win ... and wish that my mother and other members of my family were still with us ... how excited they would be!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSuS8T1BiaJ17kFibriDeMxeBBk8HqaAOScB1JqK5_AWoduAO2ZJmwBffCaskU1iANwSxmmOLIiVsagvMV0Pz0Uygkk0XULrAA8BD4d_7bKs6wnINZUgGQ_eZQWQI0mF_Yej1MvDStrLA/s1600/Old-Baby-Shoes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSuS8T1BiaJ17kFibriDeMxeBBk8HqaAOScB1JqK5_AWoduAO2ZJmwBffCaskU1iANwSxmmOLIiVsagvMV0Pz0Uygkk0XULrAA8BD4d_7bKs6wnINZUgGQ_eZQWQI0mF_Yej1MvDStrLA/s400/Old-Baby-Shoes.jpg" width="400" height="368" /></a></div>Painter Charliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06537406401936612751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6460365883292286205.post-25335936519355914062016-10-28T05:04:00.000-07:002016-10-28T05:04:33.868-07:00This is the 3rd painting in the Fall Session with Terry Armstrong for this year. I have, for now, decided to call it finished ... but, I'm still looking at it! LOL! My gosh, are we EVER satisfied with our own work. I always think of that saying .. "It takes 2 people to create a painting. One to paint it and one to tell the artist when to stop." I have it "temporarily" matted, but there is a lot more painting at the top. This is how I have it cropped for now, but that could change later and I could decide to show a lot more of that background above the bridge. The final painting is a nuthatch, on a tree, in the winter. It was not finished in class so for now, it's sitting on an easel and I give it a look every time I walk past it. I want to get away from it for a bit and then go back to finishing it with a "fresh eye". For now, I find that I am already wishing the year away, hoping for spring so that it's time for Terry's Spring session ... hey, I'm a little old lady, and I don't need to be wishing time away!!! If Terry taught weekly classes, then I wouldn't have to do that.<br />

I still haven't decided how I will trim this one .. to mat it. Also, am still "looking at it" to see if there are any changes or additions that I want to make. I really loved this class .. it was such a great blend of realism with the addition of a little impressionism. I've titled it "The Last Geranium" ... and am always sad when the last of the flowers are finally dying off in the fall of the year .. and like that little geranium in the window, I have one left ... still hanging on.<br />

Cheryl and I paint together at Terry's Studio for 4 Tuesdays each fall .. and we paint in the "Bad Girl's Room" with Dori! Sometimes I wonder if we learn ... as much as we laugh! It's a joy to paint with the ladies ... as well as with everyone else who takes the class. Terry is such a really REALLY great artist (you can find a link to his site on my Favorite Watercolor Artists page) .... here's a photo of Cheryl and I, with our Milkweek Pod paintings... we both had some additional work to finish up on them and you can see my finished product below this photo of Cheryl and I.<br />

Thoughts Of Winter</span><br />
<br />
On Thursday, August 11 .. I started on this painting. Had found the photo of the old barn and loved the barn, The photograph was taken in the summer and was a close up of the barn and I just felt that I would place it in surroundings (and in the winter), go make it a bit more forlorn and deserted .... it's an old barn, and I wanted that feeling of "being left alone_ so I painted it as a winter scene and added an old road. I worked the painting until I got to the foreground and then stopped so that I could spend a couple of days deciding exactly how I wanted to handle the background .... then, on the 14th I started on that foreground in the morning and finished it by late afternoon. I love the hot summer sun, the hotter the better. But, as much as I love the summer I sure do love snow and I especially love to paint snow. <br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I Do Love Pinecones..brings thoughts of the North Woods!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have always loved pine trees and pine cones ... and birch trees. In reading and doing research I've found that Poland is filled with birch trees and with pine trees so perhaps my love is "inherited"???? </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In any case, over the holidays I had done a tutorial of a pine bough, pinecone and a red ribbon and had so much fun painting it .. so, I decided to just do a simple pinecone all by itself. The painting is a watercolor done on hot pressed paper purchased from Twinrocker here in Indiana.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Twinrocker is "handmade" watercolor paper. The company makes it in various weights and they also make it hot pressed, cold pressed and rough. You can also purchase the feathered edges or natural edge, which this painting was done on or you can purchase the very heavily deckled paper which gives you an entirely different option for framing.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">THE END OF THE SPRING SESSION</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our last class for the Spring Session with Terry Armstrong was last Tuesday. The three of us in the photo may very well be smiling, but it was indeed, a sad day for us. The subject for this last class was a lake scene, which I really am not even half way finished with. It'll sit for a while and I'll "contemplate" on what I'm going to do with the painting. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sitting next to me is "ma bud" .. Cheryl. Every single time we get together, it's smiles, laughs and joy. Now, behind us is Dori .. a very, very special lady and a wonderful artist. Dori is .. well .. every once in a while, life sends one of those special people around .. those people that we call "kindred spirits". The good lord, in his wisdom, put not only lots of years between Dori and I, but he put lots of miles. If he hadn't ... well, I can't even guess at the things that we would have gotten into together. Dori makes me smile and she makes my heart sing ... and on top of that, she can make a mean Bloody Mary when she wants to. So, this is the end of Spring Session and we find ourselves already looking forward to autumn! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomorrow, I'm starting on a new learning adventure and am really excited. When I begin to accomplish things ... I'll post them! Thanks for peeking in.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

This painting is another project from Terry Armstrong's Spring Session. The classes are now over for this session and I am already looking forward to the Fall Session. Gosh, summer isn't even here and I am already wishing it away ... and, as much as I love snow, I love the summer sun and hot HOT weather! I have never painted a chicken or rooster, so this was quite a challenge but the classes was an excellent one and Terry's instructions were so helpful. Per usual, there are things I would do differently next time around. There are things that I would change and even omit but like I've said before, each class with Terry is a true learning experience. Now, I'm rummaging around ... looking for something to "inspire me"!<br />

Spent the rest of the day adding the additional layers that I was going to take the next few days to "think about"! ... well, what can I say .. I was anxious. It's always great when a painting possesses you. So ... here's the 3rd of the classes for the Spring session with Terry Armstrong.</div>

Class was great yesterday! Still have a long way to go with the painting, but I certainly learned a lot! The subject was day lilies and we were afforded the opportunity to choose the design of the flowers and the colors. In the first image here, the centers of the flowers were placed. Some of the objects have been covered with mask to protect the images when layers of color are added later.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In this image, 3 or 4 layers of color were applied and then I started to work on the detail of the flower at the top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The background was added in separate layers and additional layers were added to the 3 flowers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I worked on the painting last night and again this morning .. adding 3 more layers of color to the main flower and 2 more layers to the flower on the left. Then, to get an idea of where I wanted to go with the painting I scanned it into my computer and "cropped it" .. trying to decide what I wanted to keep and what I wanted to leave out. The painting will sit on a stand and I will study it for a few days .. hopefully, not as long as I had to study that darned rabbit!!! .. than one took me a year to finish! In any case, I know that all the buds have to be started and finished as well as the additional application of layers to the 3 flowers. </div>

</h2>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-family: "calibri";">Today was the second painting lesson for
the Spring 2016 sessions. Each Spring Terry Armstrong offers 4 different
classes and then, in the Fall, 4 more classes are offered. I so look forward to
these classes. You all know how much I love snow and popsicles, my spouse and
my pets??? ... well, I would say that I love those classes even more, but I
don't want to slight my spouse or my pets ... however......</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-family: "calibri";">This class was devoted to a "Rooster" ...
not Rooster Cogburn (as in John Wayne) but a feathered critter. I've done some
smaller paintings of birds, including birds of prey, but had never painted a
chicken or rooster and I have to admit, I have a new admiration for these little
devils. Not the easiest thing I've ever painted .. and I would say it was like
"pulling hens teeth" but that would bring out the punsters and I certainly don't
want to do that!!! I am (maybe) two thirds of the way done, maybe a little
less. Will set the little dickens up and watch him for the next few days, just
to study him additionally and make some decisions about what I'll do and how
I'll do it.</span></div>

am, working away .. being industrious, while my best painting buddy is
pretending to be busy!!! Cheryl and I take the classes together and I can't
tell you how much I enjoy painting with her. Besides the fact that she is one
talented lady ... she's a very special person.</span></div>

Betsy. She is up front, with her black shirt and her painting glasses on, working a lot harder than Cheryl! The gentleman standing in the back is Terry Armstrong, our mentor and a wonderful artist. What is so darned amazing is that we are all painting the exact same subject but each artist manages to apply their own preferences and their own style. So, the paintings are all so different. Am already looking forward to the next class! </span></span></span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the spring of the year (usually in April) & then again in the fall (usually October) I take classes from <a href="http://www.terryarmstrong.net/" target="_blank">Terry Armstrong</a> an Indiana artist, (click on his name to take you to his website) - a wonderful Indiana Artist. There are 4 sessions in the spring and 4 in the fall. Our first class for the spring session was a Common Lake Loon. First time painting this bird for me. However, this is a bird that I have loved all my life. From the time I was born, our family vacationed in the Northwoods of Minnesota, up along the Canadian border and in northern Wisconsin along the border with Michigan. As a small child I would lay awake at night, just waiting to hear the calls of those beautiful birds and I am no different today. If I were told that today, I would loose my hearing but would be allowed to take 3 sounds with me it would be easy for me to pick those 3 sounds. The first sound I would take with me would be the sounds of the lake loon, calling across the lake. The other 2 sounds would be a train whistle, way off in the distance. As a child I lived near enough to the rail road tracks and station and could hear the sound coming in through my bedroom window as I wondered where the people on the train were going, who they were and why they were traveling. The 3rd sound that I would take would be the sound of a ship moving through the fog in the night, it's fog horn sounding so haunting in the distance. It's funny, but I notice these 3 sounds that are my favorite are all haunting, mournful sounds, but they are sounds that call to me. Sounds that all my life, I have listened for and have loved to hear.</div>
